Medicine Shields

A Medicine Shield is the artistic expression of the unique gifts that its maker wishes to impart to others about their particular life journey. Shields were made for many reasons and were not just for the tribal warriors to carry into battle. The Native American male would carry them into battle and were an expression of their inner strengths used to help the tribe. A Native American woman's shield spoke of her gifts of healing, singing, beading, etc. The shield of the Medieval Knight spoke of his affinity and allegiance to a king or clan. Every shield carries the medicine (inner expression) of the person who carries it. Through its art and self-expression, each shield is the essence of a time and space that carries certain aspects of knowledge. All persons carry shields of the lessons they personally learned from the four directions on the Medicine Wheel. Each shield is a reminder of the makers connection to life. Medicine Shields are the healing tools we give ourselves to soothe the spirit and empower the will.

During the year long preparation for my Healing Quest, I created thirteen Medicine Shields to honor each Clan Mother. The creation of these shields were a way to express my reverence for the teachings given to me through the Thirteen Clan Mothers. After the Healing Quest, I gave away to each of my clan sisters a shield that most represented their personal medicine. I still have eight of them hanging on my wall.
